The Star Trackers Track & Field Club returned home Sunday afternoon with much to be proud of.  Sixteen (16) of our athletes competed at the 3rd Edition of the Douglas Forrest Invitational Meet in Kingston, Jamaica on Saturday, January 13th which saw performances from over 2,000 athletes from Jamaica, Cayman Islands and the Bahamas.

The team was lead by Coaches David Charlton and Rudolph Ferguson, along with Team Manager Laura Pratt-Charlton, parents and supporters.  The team left a lasting first impression in Jamaica as they recorded some spectacular performances.

The athletes started off the meet by Natalya Beneby winning the very first event on the track, the Open Women’s 400m Hurdles in a time of 1:03.20 and they ended the meet with bang as Trevor Strachan Jr. ran away with the 1500m in a personal best time of 4:19.02.

The highlight of the meet was the Open Men 1,600 Sprint Medley.  The team of Nathan Arnett, Aaron Wilmore, Nejmi Burnside and Dwayne Ferguson, running the 400m, 200m, 200m and 800m respectively, won the event in 3:31.70.  This win came much to the surprise of the Jamaicans whose announcer had already boasted, “The Bahamians not taking home the GOLD”!

The baby of the group, Printassia Johnson won the 200m in 25.14 and Kenneth Wallace-Whitfield won the 800m in 1:55.88, surpassing the Carifta qualifying standards and also recording his personal best.  Nathan Arnett placed 2nd in the Open Men 400m Hurdles in a time of 54.76.   Devon Creary placed 3rd in the 400m in a time of 51.14 (PR). Dwayne Ferguson was 3rd in the 800m in a time of 1:58.70.

Coach Charlton said that overall he was pleased with the performances of all the athletes, they all gave 110%. He was even more impressed with the fact that this was the first meet for the season and can hardly wait for the rest of the season’s meets.  The team competes again at the 4th Star Performers Track Classic on February 3rd.  He is also looking forward to taking the team back to Jamaica for the Gibson Relays in February.
